Three Sneaky Ways of New Age Teachings

On my last blog post, I talked about Letty’s testimony, as well as, what “New Age” is all about. We learned that “New Age” practices are a direct gateway to the devil. He wants to keep us from our purpose, our calling and from the best that God has planned for us.

This week, we will be talking about “The Secret” and the law of attraction. The reason I am spending time on this subject is to educate you. It is important to be aware of the tactics of the enemy. Without a doubt, don’t deny that the enemy exist.

We need to be aware of our enemy and of his devices. In fact, when we, the body of Christ get deceived, that is an opened door to the devil.

So, what is the big “Secret”.

The book “The Secret” is based off of the Law of Attraction. What you attract is what you get.

“Like millions of other people who fell into the Law of attraction trap, I resonated with it and it sounded so easy, so simple. I could control my reality with my mind. The title of the book even made it seem so mysterious and exclusive that I think it made people want to learn it that much more”

Letty McCardle

Pastor Stephen Davey also mentions “The Secret” in his sermon titled “The Ol’ Time Revelation”. Here is what he said:

“Rhonda (the author) calls it “the most powerful law in the universe that never stops working.”

She goes on to explain, “What we do is we attract into our lives the things we want, and that is based on what we’re thinking and feeling . . . this principle explains that we create our own circumstances our own thoughts – which means our thoughts are the most powerful things we have here on earth.”

The truth about The Secret is that you do not choose to follow God; you choose to recognize that you are God – you are divine; you are sovereign.

“Eve, I have a secret . . . eat this fruit and you shall be as God.”

It does not really surprise me that this kind of thinking has the world deceived. What surprises me is that this is the same corrupt, self-deceived concept within the prosperity movement of the church whose false teachers have repackaged this age-old lie into supposed revelation from God.

These false teachers are leading people into a misguided, self-centered belief system that corresponds to the lie of the enemy that people are really gods and whatever they say has the power to create reality.

Three Sneaky Ways of New Age Believes

Based off of Letty’s testimony here are three sneaky ways and problems she mentions about the law of attraction.

  • 1. LOA takes a nugget of truth such as the validity of “positive thinking” and blows it out of proportion.

For example our thoughts and feelings do have an impact on our physical well-being. LOA uses this as proof that if it works for health it works for everything in life. However, the reason it works for our health is due to how God designed our bodies… not because of our connection with a universal energy force. The Bible agrees, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones” (Proverbs 15:30).

So thinking positive may help with your physical heath but I wouldn’t count on it making you a millionaire or finding you a good spouse.

  • 2. Emphasis on money and wealth – Show me the money!

The Secret claims that the universe is like a vending machine. You ask for what you want and it has to deliver. In reality, our financial success is determined by our decisions, our hard work, and our wise stewardship of what we have. No matter how positive our thoughts and how focused our mind is on wealth, if we have built mountains of debt, the bills will continue to come. I found that out in my own life at the time.

Proverb 22:7 says “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” That is why they call it MASTERcard!

  • 3.  Where is God??- Wait you are god

In the law of attraction, God, if He even exists, is nothing more than a universal energy force that we manipulate by our thoughts and feelings. The law of attraction assumes a pantheistic (God is everything) view of God. The Secret denies the ideas of a personal God (with thoughts, feelings, and emotions) and a sovereign God (omnipotent and omniscient, perfectly in control of everything).

The core message of “The Secret” is that WE are in control of our own destiny. God knows the truth to be very different, “…All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16).

The Secret propelled me to read other books by authors such as Depak Chopra, Eckert Tolle, Wayne Dyer. All of which gave the reader their methods on how to empower oneself. Even Oprah promotes these teachings and regularly has guest interviews similar type “Spiritual teachers.”

They taught how to raise your consciousness and then you will reach “enlightenment.” I was not sure what that meant but it sounded good. I realize now that in studying and involving myself in these theories, what I was really doing is running away from my problems and running from the only one that could truly help me. That was Jesus. The enemy had me where he wanted me.”

Stay Alert

So there is nothing new about “New Age”. It is the same old devil trying to convince you, that YOU have the power and down play the real power, which is Jesus.

1 Peter 5:8 New Living Translation (NLT) Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Conclusion

I love in Letty’s testimony how she not only tells her story but she most importantly exposes the enemy. By her story I was able to take the blinders off my own eyes and notice how “New Age” crept into my life. For that simple reason it is important to pay attention to what and who you are listening to!
